My Students

I am a sixth grade science and 7th grade math teacher at a local Pre K-8 school in New York. We have received science K'nex kits from the generous donors on donors choose. The students absolutely loved the kits. They learned so much by creating simple machines. My goal is to bring the kits into the math class. By creating the shapes instead of just drawing them on a piece of paper. These kits will help bring math to life!

My Project

The kits I need are specifically designed for middle school math classrooms. They include all the topics that are covered in grades six through eight. Geometry can be very challenging for students because it is only drawn on paper. These kits will allow me to bring geometry off of the paper and into their hands. They will be able to create the shape and truly understand the how the shape is created and its attributes.

By giving students the opportunity to also create the shapes, they will be able to see the rules of geometry in action.

Geometry instructions needs to be more that just a list of rules and procedures, it needs to be hands on.

If students receive a strong foundation in geometry instruction now, when they begin to study the higher levels it will be less frustrating for them Mathematics instruction must become more interactive.
