My Students

“What is the USSR capital? Why is Germany divided in two? Czechoslovakia? I can’t find Montenegro!” These are few questions that I find every year when I let my middle school students browse through my classrooms' really old globes.

I teach Middle School in an urban public school at Illinois, with more than 80% of my students under poverty level.

The population of my classroom is usually composed of 70% Hispanic, 20% African American and a remaining 10% of Caucasians and Asians. Half of my class does not have a computer at home, and they rely completely in the resources that we have in school.

My Project

Today we live in a global world, and our students more than ever before are in need to be aware of all the changes that are happening so fast in it. I can bring up to my projector a new and more actualize version of a virtual globe from my students to see, but experience taught us that our children learn better by seeing, reading and touching. When we are learning about a new part of the world, my student will be able to work with their new globes and have an accurate and realistic view of how it looks like nowadays.

The United States ranked second to last, above only Mexico, in geographic knowledge.

More and better geography in our schools can correct this problem. Globalization is demanding us to understand better our world.
