Geocaching for All: Using Technology to Investigate Nature
My students need more GPS units so that the all students in all our classes (even bigger classes) can have their own GPS unit during our Geocaching Instructional Unit.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
It is amazing how much our students love physical activity and exercise! Unfortunately, opportunities for many of these same students are very limited outside the school setting as a result of a lack of high-quality resources and facilities in their neighborhoods.
Our school's Physical Education program has the wonderful opportunity to create an innovative, high-quality experience for our urban students to learn and appreciate the health benefits of physical activity.
The City of Indianapolis is thriving economically, but many of our families still face economic challenges with over 70% of our students receiving free lunches. New supplies and equipment are sure to bring excitement and energy into the learning environment.
My Project
My students need more GPS units so that all of the children in my classes (even bigger classes) can participate in our Geocaching Unit. Students will need eTrex GPS units to navigate to various caches hidden on our 39-acre campus. Caches are typically hidden in or around interesting elements of nature targeted to expand their knowledge and understanding of Environmental Science.
The sport of Geocaching is a wonderful learning activity that incorporates fitness and teamwork in a natural setting.
The integration of this sport with Environmental Science makes this a uniquely enriching learning experience. It is an especially effective for our urban students as it increases their exposure to natural settings and fosters an appreciation for our environment.
