My students are special because they are diverse learners. Many of us are familiar with the three general categories in which people learn: visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic learners. Beyond these three general categories, many theories of and approaches toward human potential have been developed. Among them is the theory of multiple intelligences, developed by Howard Gardner, Ph.D., Professor of Education at Harvard University. I believe that all children should be exposed to materials and experiences that foster their strengths and develop their weaknesses.
My students are all unique: some are auditory learners, some bodily-kinesthetic, some are naturalists, many are visual learners.
Intelligence is not one dimensional. There are so many ways that we are intelligent.
My Project
Many students entering fourth grade are not experienced reading in different genres. Through creating a biography project, it is my goal to have students select a biography from the collection matching their reading level and interest to read independently.
Students will be given time to discuss with a partner the key elements, text structure, new information and questions that arise through reading biographies.
Students will note important information and decide how to present their key findings and understandings to an audience of classmates. This will help students to learn about many different people who have made a difference in the world as well as improve their reading skills and strategies.
