My students are avid readers who enjoy discovering both new and classic tales that engage them in critical thinking. In addition to the classroom texts we read, they also enjoy reading their outside choice novels checked out of our school library.
Most students in my class are generally reading two to three novels at a time, so they are always waiting for the next exciting classroom read.
Both the Dystopian and classic Horror/Gothic genres are genres that scored as high interest for the majority of readers in my classroom.
My Project
I am starting a nonfiction project on genocide, and would like my students to read about various genocides in history. By doing so students will be able to apply the 10 stages of genocide to other atrocities that happen around the world that do not get as much coverage as the Holocaust.
The seven books requested for this project will help advance student knowledge about the effects of genocide and genocides outside of the Holocaust.
Most of these books offer first hand accounts (memoirs) of survivors, and it is important students know how genocide affects one's physical and emotional well being.
