My students are inquisitive, enthusiastic learners whose "need to know," fuels their willingness to try new things. This willingness to step outside their comfort zone embodies the reason I became a teacher. In fact, this group of students has impacted me as a teacher in such a way that I am rolling up with them to sixth grade! This past semester, each of these students researched a topic that they wanted to learn more about in order to become a genius in that area. They spent an hour each week researching, thus the name Genius Hour! Then they created a presentation to share with their peers. They collaborated and encouraged each other to become masters at their subject. They truly embraced the challenge and I was so impressed at the knowledge they acquired throughout the semester and were able to present in their Genius Hour projects.
My Project
My students need flexible workspace to create projects using 21st century skills. This stand up desk has space for two students to work on a project or presentation using a laptop or tablet. This flexible work area will add a real work- world feel that will spark their already enthusiastic nature and build their confidence to follow a rubric to complete a project. I try to incorporate projects that are real world, such as applying for class jobs, interviews, speeches, mock trials, and project- based learning opportunities to teach them necessary skills and prepare them to choose a career path when they leave me and go to secondary!
