Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is driven by the students' creativity and ingenuity. We use hands-on activities one day that give the enrichment gifted students need. The other day is for Genius Hour where students can focus on a topic that they are passionate about. They do the research and present their projects.
My students are the gifted and talented group on campus.
Most are self-motivated but it has to be a topic they enjoy. We are a charter school where we focus on STEM. These students love to ask the "what if" questions. Our school system wants to encourage this type of thinking and to cultivate it so that new innovations and theories are created.
My Project
Gifted students can have wild ideas that other people may think are strange. I am hoping to create an atmosphere of safety and community with the materials I have requested. I am hoping they feel their ideas are welcome and they are in a safe place to explore and create. The bean bag chairs will help create that atmosphere where the "what if" questions will come more easily because the students feel comfortable and the rug will help make the room feel warm, cozy and inviting.
By us adding Genius Hour this year, the students will be able to explore ideas and topics that they are interested in and that they feel passionate about.
Using the bean bag chairs and rug will help achieve this. My room is in an old part of the building. The walls are cinder block and the carpet is old. It takes a lot to make the room feel homey and welcome. These materials will help attain this goal for me.
