I need to attend this course offered by the American Museum of Natural History to further my knowledge in genetics and the study of genomes to improve upon my lessons for classroom use.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have had the pleasure of working with some of the greatest students and in doing so I have given back to the same high school I attended.
Teaching in an urban school district, I encounter a very diverse group of students from very different and unique backgrounds.
All of my students have their own range of abilities which makes for a very challenging but exciting educational and learning experience for all of us. My students are everything to me.
My Project
I am requesting to attend this course to further my knowledge as a teacher and become more current on the advancements in genetics. Many of the resources used in this course will be adapted for classroom use. I will be able to develop a plan to teach data driven lessons about genetics. I will examine ethics and genetic technology and their impacts on society. The use of computer activities, tools used in the field of biotechnology, videos, and images will be used to centralize genetic concepts. Beginning with the foundations of hereditary and the work of Gregor Mendel I can work my students up to more challenging topics of genomics and the human genome.
Cloning and genetic food modification are no longer restricted to Sci-Fi movies.
Many of my students have no idea about what is going on in the world of genetics and how new research and advancement might impact them. The future is here and now. My goal is to take this knowledge to advance my student's understanding of the world around them and to get them to think critically about the bioethics behind some of these advancements. Teaching science is all about making connections. If I can connect the content I am teaching to their lives in a way they can relate to, I can build or further their knowledge about genetics.
