My Students
My school is a K-6 International Baccalaureate magnet program in a large urban district. All students have music twice a week where dancing, singing, and playing instruments is the heart of our music program. We will eventually add on seventh and eighth grade, making full primary and middle school programs. I always look forward to my music classes because my students are smart, curious, funny, eager, and so loving! They are diverse in many ways; racially, economically, academically, socially, and emotionally.
The universal language of music brings us all together!
It is the great equalizer! On the other hand, our diversity is celebrated and brings different cultural strengths to our music-making!
My Project
Songs have been a vehicle for storytelling for centuries! Chunking up time into generations (about 25 years), my older music students will research and choose one song representative of each generation. These generational times periods will be: 1900-1925, 1925-1950, 1950-1975, 1975-2000, and 2000-today. We will learn the 5 songs, record them, and publish to student portfolios and/or Youtube. Part of the research will include students interviewing adults (parents, grandparents, teachers) to ask what songs THEY know from these eras. We will include some of these interview stories in the info section of our uploaded videos.
"I consider music to be storytelling, melody and rhythm." Jack White's quote describes our project perfectly.
The requested guitars will be added to the ones we have to play the songs. The requested iPad will be our vehicle for creating the video to share our song stories.
This generational theme can be used with music, literature, art, dance, and so many other subjects. This project will really be a story within a story, because while a song tells a story all on its own, songs and music are part of the story of our lives. When students learn about songs from other generations, they are learning about others' stories for a great sociological journey. My students will grow academically, socially, and personally because of this multi-layered project.
