My students need audio books to help them explore more of the world they live in! My students will have a higher advantage of learning new words independently and intrinsically build a lifelong love of reading!
I teach and mentor fifth grade students. Populated by African American and Hispanic American students we naturally exhibit diversity. However, our children desire to learn of other cultures as many of them do not travel outside of a 20 mile radius. We are located near one of North Carolina's biggest metropolitan areas, Charlotte, NC.
We follow a traditional school calendar taking in during the month of August and dismissing during the month of June.
Our classrooms begin with X number of students at the beginning of the year, and end with a different set of X number of students. Thus, we interact and encounter many different ethnic groups. As our students are limited in their travels, our students need something to help them understand different places. We would love your help in supporting our growth of world knowledge.
My Project
As many students of low SES love listening to all things read to them, these materials will allow my students to independently seek out books of their interest for leisurely reading. In return, my students will be able to quinch their thirst of book read aloud without having to wait until “story-time”. Additionally, as my students have more availability of these materials it will begin to build their vocabulary, reading stamina, and comprehension, ultimately increasing their literacy skills. Having a motivation and purpose for coming to school, makes a world of difference in attendance and closing the gap for my students.
