Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Were you always excited about back-to-school shopping?
My 10th grade writing students can only afford the most basic school supplies.
In fact, the school helps by providing each student with a packet of notebook paper and a few pens at the start of the school year. Our school is a small college-prep high school in a large urban area in New York. Many of my students read below grade level. This can make the daily responsibilities of school very stressful. The staff and students work very hard, and we are all excited that 100% of our students are accepted to college.
My Project
The supplies I have requested target specific lessons. For example, the overhead projector timer is to help students count down the remaining minutes on an SAT passage. The colored index cards are used for a lesson when I teach the students how to differentiate between main ideas and supporting details. The colored copy paper is for any handout that they are to keep for the whole year. The two different colors of ruled paper will be used to record different types of analysis, such as compare/contrast and cause/effect. The manila folders are for the writing folders. I have found that providing different materials for various lessons is one of the most effective ways to engage struggling students.
Please consider funding school supplies for my students.
I know these are effective materials because I've used these lesson ideas in the past, and my students have passed the state exam at the end of the year. This is an important accomplishment because the English credit is required for high school graduation.
