This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mostly from project housing (Section 8) and don't have a lot of resources. They are very focused, though, and looking forward to school as a means of upward mobility.
The students at school are wonderful and respectful beyond belief!
Living in Spanish Harlem, their lives are busy and loud but in the school building they seem to be focused compared to other students their age. Students typically go to high level high schools after the 8th grade.
My Project
I'm just starting as a general music teacher here (I taught middle and high school for seven years in Brooklyn) in Spanish Harlem and I need some necessary equipment for the first month! These include storybooks with CDs that students can learn melodies and sing them back to me for evaluation (the dictaphone will be used as a quick method of assessment for the children). There are also games and scarves that include movement to music, too. School starts very soon and those kids will be looking forward to books and songs that I've requested in this project!
I want to give my students the best general music experience that I can.
I want them remembering me like I remember my elementary music teachers. The gift of loving and singing music will last throughout their entire lives.
