Mr. Stewart from Chicago IL is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need drumsticks, recorders, percussion mallets and a decent sound system in order to provide them with the music education they need and deserve!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come from very diverse and challenging backgrounds. Through these materials their minds will not only be enriched by listening to music but their worlds will be changed by discovering self control, building confidence, elevating their self esteem and self worth.
My students live and learn in a rough neighborhood located in Illinois's biggest city.
Over 97% of my students come from low income and diverse families where greater than 20% of the student population is considered special needs. They attend a public school where the staff and administration are very supportive and deeply care about their education and overall well being. At our school we know many of the students come from difficult and challenging backgrounds and we strive everyday to enrich and develop their young minds. In return the students make us laugh, sometimes cry and overall inspire us to continue to lead and educate them.
I have asked for a simple sound system to plug into my computer so that the students can listen to music and performances through quality speakers. These speakers will be used to play musical examples of concepts being taught. They will accompany the students as they sing and most importantly they will expose the students to different types of music that they may never have heard without them. I have asked for a class set of drumsticks and recorders in order to make sure that every child when in my classroom will get a chance to play and follow along with musical concepts being taught. My 5th-8th grade students are learning music through playing the drums while my 3rd-4th grade students are learning to read music through the use of recorders. Last but not least I have requested a small set of percussion mallets. The mallets will be used for the kindergarten through 2nd grade students who are learning music through playing bells and xylophones.
This project is so important because these materials will provide the students with the opportunity to learn through playing instruments instead of just singing and reading about music.
These materials will not only allow the students to learn music but they will be used as tools to develop group collaboration, leadership, perseverance, and self control. Most importantly the materials give the students the opportunity to have fun while learning!
