This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work at a very large Title I (600 students) school. The diversity is mainly Asian, Latino, and African American. Of 600+ students, 350 are ELL (English Language Learners) and our school has 90% of students who receive free or reduced-price lunch. We offer free breakfast, lunch and after school meals to students. We are a program improvement school that offers many great programs after school, tutoring, and reading intervention. Our API is 730 and we have a goal of 800 this year. We are multicultural and have students speaking many different languages (Cantonese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Punjabi, Tagalog).
Our students do not have available funds to buy needed gear.
They often play in street clothes, including their regular jeans. We don't let that discourage them from playing their best, but it's very hard for them to play against some of the most affluent schools in the district.
My Project
Our students have never had a uniform. Many play in street clothes. I strongly believe if they are dressed in correct basketball gear, they will not only feel like a cohesive team, but they will play even better and with confidence. Appearances mean a lot to kids. We want to raise their confidence and to allow them to walk into an "away game" looking very much like their opponents. Many of our opponents are from "well to do" schools with parents attending, teams wearing the newest basketball shoes and all wearing matching gear. If we could start with matching gear, I believe our students will want to play harder and better.
