My students need 30 copies of "Bodega Dreams", an adaptation of "The Great Gatsby", by Ernesto Quinonez.
Answer honestly, did you enjoy "The Great Gatsby" as a teen? Although my 8th grade ELA students live only an hour away from East Egg Long Island, to them Fitzgerald's lavish world seems galaxies away.
My school library lacks class sets of books which relate to my students' lives. Since my students have not encountered books which relate to their lives, they hate reading, and therefore, have low reading levels.
Ernesto Quinunez understood the challenges facing NYC teens, since he grew up in Spanish Harlem. His novel, "Bodega Dreams," adapts Fitzgerald's classic to the streets of New York.
Your help will ensure that my students encounter a book which will inspire them to read! Finally, reading will be a pleasure, not a punishment. Furthermore, the students will meet characters who understand the obstacles of being a teen in New York.
