My Students

Our school's mission is to ensure that all students flourish as caring, responsible, and productive citizens. We want to ensure that we give our students relevant learning experiences that will lead them to their future.

All students want to be successful, they want to believe that their futures are bright and shiny and that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to, but some students have factors working against them that make a successful future seem out of reach.

I teach many of these students: students who qualify for special education with services in social skills and behavior management. Some of my students have difficulty regulating their emotions so they can remain in the classroom to learn. Some of my students have difficulty making personal connections, reading emotions and reacting in appropriate ways. Many of my students also have learning disabilities as well. Creating authentic learning experiences is the best way for my students to learn. We can teach our students how to interact with people and coping strategies for when their emotions are getting beyond their control, but without real experiences for them to practice these skills all the teaching in the world is pretty useless.

My Project

Our Middle School Social and Behavior Skills, Autism, and Newcomer ELL classes are going to start a coffee shop to serve hot beverages and treats to the adults that work in our building. My students struggle with making connections with other people, having appropriate conversations with others, showing respect when they are frustrated, organization, and hygiene. We are including the Autism and Newcomer ELL classes in our coffee shop as they are new programs at our school and we want them to get to know adults and students outside of their programs so they feel included in our school community

My 7th and 8th graders will be starting to look for jobs in the next couple of years, your donations to start this coffee shop will give my students relevant experiences that they can take with them when they get their first jobs.

These students will gain experience planning a menu, cooking treats, handling money, counting back change, practicing proper hygiene around food, using technology to advertise and take delivery orders, organizing delivery orders, and having appropriate social exchanges with their customers.

I want my students to take pride in the product that they are offering. We will be using whole locally roasted beans that my students will freshly grind each coffee shop day using the burr coffee grinder, they will brew a house blend and a decaf blend which is why we need two coffee makers. An adult We will also offer tea and hot chocolate to our teachers that don't enjoy coffee. We need reusable coffee cups to minimize the amount of waste that our coffee shop creates as well as give dish washing experiences to our students.
