The kindergarten students in my classroom come from almost every continent in the world. Their diverse backgrounds bring unique perspectives and joy to our classroom. My students love learning through play and inquiry. They are curious problem solvers. I know that I am teaching global citizens that will one day change the world to make it a better place!
It's no secret that the pandemic has uprooted normalcy in the typical American classroom. Trying to get kindergarteners to learn while staying distanced is tricky business. But I am hopeful! As this current surge wanes, our ability to gather close together will come back.
At the center of this gathering is a classroom easel.
The easel is the heart of the kindergarten classroom. Students excitedly gather together to create and write stories, read big books, and explore numbers. They know the routine: when the teacher gathers them on the carpet around the easel, exciting learning is about to happen! This year I moved into a classroom without an easel. We have managed since we cannot come together on the carpet, but I want to be ready when we can once again be close. I know this will help bring back the joy of learning close together.
