This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Growing up in a low-income area presents my students with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Before walking into my classroom, my students were reluctant to embark on our literary journey. While they wish to succeed, the biggest challenge they face is learning to overcome the adversities that have been placed in their way.

At the beginning of the year, when I ask students what their favorite subject is, language arts is rarely one of them.

Some even assert that reading is boring and that they just aren’t any good at reading and writing. Every day I attempt to ease their apprehension and expose them to a variety of texts and genres. I try to show them that it is not that “reading is boring”, but instead they have not found the right book. Each year I get closer to this goal. By creating a positive and safe learning environment, my students continue to show academic growth. In my classroom, students are encouraged to pick up a book and explore the powerful impact of words. They even get to tap into their own creativity and take part in our annual poetry cafe in which students find and develop their voices.

My Project

We are requesting storage cubes and two dry-erase tables where they can work collaboratively. My students learn best when they are given the chance to move around and get comfortable. I would like to add more flexible seating options to replace 12 restrictive desks located at the center of my room.

This year my school is emphasizing the implementation of financial literacy, reading stations, and collaborative learning into our classroom.

My goal is to introduce financial literacy into my middle school classroom in an engaging manner that would enhance students' understanding of these necessary life skills. These tables will allow my students to write directly on them with dry-erase markers. Adding this interactive component will enhance student engagement.

I've tried to create a space where my students feel happy and safe. I have decorated my classroom with curtains, lanterns, and fairy lights. From the moment students walk into my room, they feel welcomed. Unfortunately with growing class sizes, the desk I currently have do not leave much room to walk around the classroom or rearrange desks to allow students to work collaboratively. Instead my students are confined to their chairs and must squeeze between desks to move around. By adding these 2 tables and cube organizer my students will be given the chance to learn in a more comfortable setting. Please help make this possible by donating to this project.
