In our low-income/high poverty county, I teach 6th grade language arts at the only middle school we have. Each day, I see a little more than one hundred students that are all searching to find out who they really are, as they have entered this new phase of their lives.
Every child should have the opportunity to feel safe and loved in their classroom, so they can meet their full potential.
Students are being pressured by society to grow up so quickly, but they still need the opportunities to make mistakes and grow from them. It is my desire that all students who pass through my classroom feel safe, loved, and encouraged....everything else will fall into place in the end.
Cooperative learning is a hot topic in the education world. Allowing students to work cooperatively increases student learning, and provides much needed social interaction This also means the classroom needs the space to make cooperative learning feasible. Tables allow students to gather around a common area in order to work together, and makes cooperative learning much more manageable.
Whether students are working in literature circles to discuss the latest read, or working on a science experiment, they need the space to accomplish their task.
A new classroom table will provide my students with a space to work cooperatively with one another, so that they are not fighting for elbow room.
