Mrs. Sanders-Bruce from Benton Harbor MI is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books, CDs and storytelling props to make stories come alive for them. These materials will engage all of the their senses and help them love books.

The preschoolers in my classroom are all part of an at-risk population, living in a community that has unbelievably high unemployment, rampant poverty, a crumbling public school system and a rare but beautiful belief that things WILL get better and that education is the key to that change.
The children in my preschool class are the future.
They are creative, curious, intelligent and hopeful. When asked what they want to be when they grow up, many want to be police officers, firefighters, doctors and teachers. These children want what all children want~to be able to make their dreams become reality. Quality education is the key to making those dreams reality and it starts in Preschool. For those children who enter our Preschool, the environment becomes not only their playground but their "brain-ground" as well. Offered many opportunities to explore books and materials, as well as participate in structured experiences designed to stimulate their learning and curiosity, Preschoolers not only gain the skills they will need for success in Kindergarten, but they develop a love of learning that follows them throughout life. When I look out at the happy, expectant faces of the Preschoolers in my classroom, the future does indeed, look bright. Help us shine.
By supporting this project, you will put books, puppets and stories in the hands and MINDS of preschoolers. Children at this age are not only sponges, picking up all that you teach them. They are also fountains, taking all that you give them and changing it with constant motion. For example, after hearing the classic fairy tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the Preschoolers in our class were disturbed, to say the least, about Goldilocks' behavior. They saw her as a "bad" character, someone they did NOT like. In fact, after much discussion about Goldilocks' treatment of the Three Bears, the Preschoolers decided that they had to "make it right." They dictated a new story to me, using the same characters but changing the plot so that Goldilocks made better choices and became the Three Bears' friend. By giving these children the access to books and story props, they may not only solve the problems of classic fiction, they may one day solve the problems of the world.
Your donation to this project will turn dollars into books, stories and experiences that will become priceless to young children for years to come.
You will give the gift of language, imagery, critical thinking and creative dramatics to children who desperately need these things in their "toolbox" for future learning and success. It will be these young children who shape and change our world; wouldn't it be nice to trust this endeavor to children who can see injustice and "make it right"?
