Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is full of excited, enthusiastic, intelligent young people who are passionate about doing the right thing and always eager to learn. Regardless of what may be going on at home they all come to school with positive attitudes and try to support one another, myself, and other staff members. These bright young fourth graders have demonstrated their exceptional nature by doing things like picking up trash, waiting for the younger grades to get on buses first, and coaching one another through difficult problems unprompted. They give me immense hope.
My Project
Currently, my classroom only has dated books in the library and students do not have many books of interest at their disposal. Independent reading is driven by reader interest, thus I understand the materials to be the problem. It has been difficult to keep students interest in books that do not excite them, but I know the desire to read is there.
Students in my class will benefit from this project because they will finally have access to books that speak to their interests.
Additionally, it is my students who have requested these specific books. I have purchased a few from these series and the result has been wonderful. The students who have had access to these books have asked to bring them to recess, home, and have spent their free time recalling information from the text demonstrating their ability to follow the story and pick up on key details. j
It is my belief that reading is the gateway to all education. It is imperative that we do whatever we can to support our student's reading comprehension and foster their love for reading. This is my goal.
