The students in our fashion design program consist of absolute beginners (some have never threaded a needle!) to 3rd year pros with mini-collections and multiple fashion shows under their belts. Students are modifying existing garments, creating from scratch full outfits, making jewelry, and embellishing accessories like shoes, hats, and belts. As part of their curriculum, they are required to fit models, work with hair stylists and makeup artists, submit music and video, and collaborate with photographers for fashion shows within the school as well as out in the community.
Their passion and dedication are such that many choose to come in for weekend sewing labs in order to have more uninterrupted time to work on garment making.
I frequently have to push them out the door to leave for the day! The collaborative environment in our program is a wonderful thing to see. A high number of students in this program struggle with academics. The chance to be successful and inspired has become one of the main reasons they keep coming to school. We've created a safe space to be creative, vulnerable and take risks. I'm truly proud of this group.
My Project
Our fashion design students come in all shapes and sizes.
Whether they are creating garments for a model or themselves, it's important to have the right tools.
This fall we attempted to make our own duct tape dress forms. We carefully researched and followed all the instructions and the results were less than perfect. As their skills have grown, it has become more critical for them to have professional dressmaking mannequins. We have noticed that garments made on the homemade forms frequently have a poor fit and are very limiting.
