Gardens Like Plants

My students need classroom kits and DVDs to learn about how plants fit in to the cycle of living things on earth.

Biology is the study of life. My 10th graders are eager to learn science through labs and other hands-on activities. The more we can show them "the real thing" the more engaged they become.

Science is about discovery. Plants are essential to the survival of animals on Earth. Photosynthesis can be viewed by the student as just something that we have to study in school. When students grow plants, they get to the essence that photosynthesis is a process that changes light energy into food. Here is where they begin to understand the significance of learning photosynthesis.

My students need to learn about how plants fit in to the cycle of living things on earth. At the beginning of the year we will use the plants to understand photosynthesis. Later in the year we will use the acid rain kit to understand the impact of man made pollutants on plants. Bill Nye has a great of explaining concepts and students get to hear content a different means. With these resources, we can put our plant light unit (already have this) to use right away and begin to develop an innate understanding of how light gets turned into matter through the process of photosynthesis. Later on in the year we will learn about the affects of nutrients on plant growth and how man-made pollutants affect plants.

Using plants as a means of studying multiple topics helps students understand the immense role they have in making our planet suitable for the huge variety of living things.
