My Students

My students are urban city youth who live in a food desert. We belong to an engineering and green technology pathway. My students would benefit significantly by learning to grow their food, participating in farmers' markets, and learning about healthy eating practices. My students are older, but the joy of gardening and growing doesn't change. Last year we gardened in the community garden, and the students were able to try new and fresh spring veggies. It was amazing to watch the kids dig and turn soil for the 1st time or plant seeds in the warm earth.

My Project

The 1st set of understanding will be at the building level. My students will build stands that maximize the grow lights and learn about hydroponics. Once the towers are made, we will be working with community partners to further our education about urban gardening.

We will be growing food year-round, allowing us to sell salads to staff for lunches and raising money to become self-sustainable.

As time goes by, the hope is also to pair with the chemistry class to learn about the making of natural beauty products. We will also use this to grow plants to sell in the spring and start plants in the community garden and our courtyard.
