Do you remember what it was like when you got your first pet? Many of my students have never had the opportunity to own a pet, so revitalizing our outdoor classroom will give them the chance to care for rabbits, turtles, toads, snakes, birds, and butterflies.
My students are a culturally diverse group of children who all attend a Title I school.
When asked what kinds of activities they want to participate in, nature is at the top of the list. A large portion of our students stay for enrichment classes, and our school offers several classes featuring nature. The past few years we have participated in Disney's Planet Challenge by helping to save the bees. We are hoping to continue the Disney vision with our gardening project this year.
My Project
We have a resident turtle who likes to visit the pond, but we need mosquito dunks to ensure that we don't get an abundance of mosquitoes. We also need planters for the flowers that will beautify the garden as well as provide food for the animals. We are also requesting supplies for the rabbits that live in the outdoor garden so they will have a steady supply of drinking water and food throughout the year. All of these materials will enhance our outdoor classroom, revitalize the habitat, and provide service learning for my students, Disney style. The Timelapse Cam is needed to show weeks worth of plant growth in a matter of minutes that can then be shared with others.
By supporting a project that is exciting for students, you can help provide a meaningful experience that has math and science skills embedded within the activity.
What better ways is there to strengthen a student's skills than by making learning fun?
