Help me give my students live caterpillars, Praying Mantises, ladybugs, and Roly Polies - to teach compassion for living creatures and support biodiversity - seeds; books and resources for a pollinator garden; and naturalist backpacks to promote conservation.
I work for a Title I school with students from diverse backgrounds, and nearly half of our school qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches. We face many financial challenges as a Title I School, and we value every resource that we have. I do my best to challenge each and every one of my students, because I have students with various academic considerations.
My goal is for every student to grow and succeed - academically and socially - and come to school with a curiosity for learning.
Therefore, I work diligently to differentiate and individualize instruction, so that my students can learn to the best of their abilities. I thrive on providing meaningful opportunities to build on students’ confidence in reading, while building integrative connections across the curriculum.
My students are dynamic and sweet. Our school is community-oriented and supportive. We value partnerships with families, and we look for ways to help our students grow. Our school has created strong partnerships in the community to build conscious, young learners. My students value giving back to others in return; and I love to inspire learners who are curious, confident, caring, committed, and inspired by their own learning potential.
My Project
This project will support life science and build compassion and respect for small, living creatures. We will apply this project to our study of Life Cycles and Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems. It will teach young children to become stewards of nature, and teach about biodiversity - as we care for our live classroom moths, butterflies, ladybugs, roly polies, and praying mantises - and attract beneficial insects.
This project will foster of a love of nature and living creatures; and create awareness for nature's pollinators, beneficial insects and decomposers.
Students will learn about the interconnectedness of insects and their role in the environment. My class will compare and contrast various living creatures with respect and compassion. Students will research interesting animal adaptations and buggy behaviors with the books.
We will plant marigolds, zinnias, moonflowers, dill, snapdragons, and a butterfly bush to attract butterflies and moths. Students will discover how to design and grow urban planters and/or gardens that attract pollinators and beneficial insects with books like, 'National Geographic Birds, Bees, and Butterflies: Bringing Nature Into Your Yard and Garden'.
We will examine how praying mantises, Painted Lady butterflies and ladybugs are beneficial insects for gardens, comparing their behaviors and various food sources. We will learn that roly polies - not insects at all - are nature's decomposers.
This project will provide hands-on learning that promotes critical thinking skills; empathy skills, cooperative learning, and naturalistic development. Students will have opportunities to observe, record, plan, and investigate the role of beneficial insects and creatures in their environment.
Students will identify the importance of bees and butterflies in our food system through research and class read-alouds, such as: Show Me The Honey, by Dr. Suess. Students can explore at home when they borrow books and nature backpacks containing: binoculars, bugcatchers, magnifying glasses, and more.
