Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first graders in an urban public school with limited access to parks, gardens and green spaces. Many of my students parents work as gardeners for other people, but my students often do not get the experience of gardening for themselves.
I teach science lessons and language development lessons about growing plants, but I am often limited by our ability to provide hands-on gardening experiences. We have no school garden. Our science kit materials are incomplete, broken and/or outdated. Our district has frozen spending on school supplies. Science materials will not be purchased this school year.
In order for me to provide my students with real, hands-on gardening experiences, I need a classroom greenhouse, first plant and grow classroom kit of soil and seeds, and a magnifier to closely observe and describe the growth process. Moreover, a pocket chart language kit on the planting and growing process will help my English language learners develop the scientific vocabulary to accurately describe their experiences and develop their oral and written language.
Your generous funding of this grant proposal will help teach Science in a hands-on way to young first graders. You will also help foster a love and awe of planting and gardening in young children that will help sustain our planet for years to come.
