Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a class of third grade students who have made it our motto this year to "change the world!" Our strong sense of community allows us to collaborate and solve problems together. We are a group of enthusiastic third grade learners looking to grow our minds and create a better future for all.
Our class is a part of a Title I school with over 70% English language learners and with 90% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Many of the students in this class aim to be first-generation college graduates. Every student in our class loves using technology to explore our world.
My Project
Why keep learning inside the classroom, when there's so much to learn outside? Our school is creating a garden to act as an outdoor classroom and science lab. Students will plant flowers, herbs and vegetables, observing their growth and the animals and insects that they attract.
My students will have an opportunity develop a better understanding of where their food comes from and cultivate an appreciation for plants, animals, and insects.
Many of our students do not have their own garden space at home. Our outdoor classroom will allow students to explore earth science and life science hands-on, while providing them with important life experiences.
To get our garden going students will need gloves to protect their hands and trowels to aide them in planting. Labels will help them remember what they planted and where. Mulch will create tidy walking paths for the students betweens their garden beds. Watering cans and a spray nozzle for our hose will make it easy for students to keep their plants growing strong. A bird feeder and birdseed will attract birds to the garden for students to observe. With the birdhouses our local high school has also donated, our garden is sure to be a bird paradise! Finally, we need a wide variety of seeds to grow all year round!
