"Look what I made, Mrs. Griffin!" is a frequent comment in our library. Students are discovering a variety of new concepts (I-0 blocks, coding) and learning, building, and creating! They are eager to tackle new tasks and are frequently disappointed when their time in the library is up, and they have to leave!
However, I teach at a Title I school with a large ESL population that is almost 100% free and reduced price lunch, and this means that many experiences are out of reach for them.
Despite these obstacles, they are terribly excited about learning. They understand the importance of reading, but many of them have a hard time sitting still long enough for a book to catch their imagination. They frequently need a personal interest revelation to give them a reason to read.
My Project
Children love our many library books about flowers, plants, and gardens. Unfortunately there has been no practical way for them to put that knowledge about plants and gardens to use.
The gardening supplies provided by this project will allow students to apply book knowledge about plants and gardens to designing, planting, and caring for their own flower garden right off the library!
The seeds, soil, tools, and greenhouse will challenge the children to be creative with the challenging space available. They’ll employ not only science and reading skills, but also problem solving ideas about watering with no apparent water source, storage limitations, and how to keep plants warm outside when it gets cold.
Our gardening project will not only help students make connections between reading and real-life activities, but also help them value reading for understanding as well as gaining valuable experience with a real-world, hands-on skill.
