Richard Yates Elementary School, located in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, has become a haven for budding young mathematicians and scientists. As the math and science coordinator for K-8th grade, I have the opportunity to work with all of our students and their teachers as we continue to build and expand our math and science program. Our most cherished resources are our school gardens. We have two locations, one in the center of our building named the Secret Garden, the other located along the street named the Memorial Garden. While several teachers utilize the gardens regularly with their students, others feel that they don't have time or there is not a clear link to their curriculum. Therefore, the Garden Club is actively developing center activities that have a direct correlation to the classroom curriculum in math and science. Several grade levels in both math and science monitor the weather. Instead of doing this from the classroom we are encouraging teachers to take their classes to the garden and use a weather station for the most accurate of data collection. There they can utilize the outdoor thermometer, hygrometer, barometer, weather vane, anemometer, and rain gauge to collect data. The weather data can then be monitored over time with data tables and graphs. In addition, journaling has become a large component of our daily curriculum. To enhance journaling opportunities and for students to develop a greater understanding of their surroundings, the Garden Club will be taking photographs of plants, trees, birds, and animals that are regularly seen in the gardens. These will be used in the development of a Yates Elementary Field Guide! Classrooms can then venture to the gardens for observations and use our school specific field guides to add greater detail to their journal writing. For printing copies of the guide, we are asking for additional ink, and for easier use and preservation of the guides, a small laminator. Digital cameras, reference guides, and hand lens, which will also be needed for the project, are already a part of our garden resources! With these additional materials, opportunities for outdoor education will increase. Students will begin to appreciate their surroundings, view their neighborhood differently, and enjoy a healthy lifestyle outdoors instead of in!
