Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students want to succeed in school and in life. As a teacher in a high-poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Help me bridge the gap.
My students come from a low, socioeconomic status, the inner-city, and have special needs.
I need to do all I can during school hours to help these students progress to well-developed, smart young men and women. To effectively teach students in a wide range of levels, I need many resources.
The majority of the students at the school come from low socioeconomic households. Students and parents do not have the financial means to provide essentials. Since Hurricanes Irma and Maria, things have become even tighter for parents. Help me bring in the necessary materials to help my students succeed in school.
My Project
I asked my students to think of some healthy snacks and the answers I got were different fruits and vegetables. I asked my students what way can we bring in fruits and vegetable for our class. A few students said a classroom garden outside the back window. The rest of the students loved that idea and I said it was a great one.
Having a classroom garden is the best way to show my students the benefits of preparing and consuming farm-to-table dishes.
Students will working on our class garden to propagate fruits and vegetables. In order to be successful, my students will need raised beds, vegetable and fruit seeds, electric stapler, potting soil, support clips, and plant cages. I will take the opportunity to teach my students the importance of eating healthy and the role farms have.
By using a garden as an academic tool I can incorporate plants into many lessons throughout the year. We can use the plants for experiments on various topics, such as photosynthesis, plant hormones, and plant anatomy. Not only will they learn about plant life cycles, but they will learned about taking care of something, patience, as well as be able to the importance of gardening to our environment. Go Earth Day!
