Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students live in the inner city of Chicago (Humboldt Park area) and are exposed to gang intimidation, drugs, violence, dysfunctional families, low socio-economical status, and other related issues that can make them feel that they need to resort to gang-involvement or destructive behavior. North-Grand High School just opened this year and started with only freshmen and we have already experienced many gang-related issues from fights to harassments, to fear of getting hurt or killed, etc. We have also experienced attempted suicides and self-harm-inflicting behavior which has led to hospitalization. In our guidance program we really want to try to make a difference and an impact in students' lives and let them know that there are other "ways out" and alternatives they can choose. The plan is to come up with a panel of former gang members who have served time in jail and have experienced the gang-life and other related issues that our students can relate to in their lives. These people will speak about their lives and offer advice and support to all 270 freshmen that we have. We would like to pay the panelists a one hundred dollar stipend each along with other necessities they may need. Our school, being so new, has already run out of funds for these kinds of things and we would really appreciate your help in providing us with funds for this cause. We would really appreciate your help in reaching our students in this powerful way. Thank you for your consideration.
