Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Si se puede" is the slogan we have in my transitional bilingual classroom in Trenton, New Jersey. By providing opportunities for students of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, these curious learners can believe that their goals are possible to achieve.
All my students have immigrated to the United States to access both the economic and educational advantages that exist here.
Their limited English proficiency is not limiting their desire to learn. They are eager to learn the required curriculum as they are developing skills in the English language.
These students have been in the country for no more than three years, and most have been here for less than a year. It is important that they participate in engaging and authentic activities to acquire their new language with confidence. As their teacher, I strive to provide them with an educational environment that fosters this growth!
My Project
My students all want to be successful in mathematics. However, many of them struggle with the complex concepts that they are required to master in the fifth grade.
Manipulatives, games and centers will provide students with opportunities to interact with complex mathematical concepts while completing fun and engaging activities that promote student success.
Fraction number lines, volume cubes, fraction multipliers, powers of ten slider boards, whole to part cards and regrouping kits will provide students with materials they need to present their method for obtaining answers. Centers such as “What’s the Best Strategy” will get students identify various ways of obtaining answers and reflecting on their successes or the lack of success with those strategies. Math Folder Games and Mastering Math Games will provide students with fun choices to achieving their goals in math.
