This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation and all students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. The school is predominately Latino and African American. 30% of the students are English language learners and some are the first of their families to graduate. Despite all of this, 100% of our graduating seniors are college or career bound.
Our students should have the same opportunities as any other student in the country.
They work hard to succeed without letting anything get in their way. As a community school, each year our graduation rate has increased and we want to make their learning as meaningful and purposeful as possible.
My Project
Academics during the day and extracurriculars at night, that's the winning combination to make the school day fun and holistic for our kids. Earlier this year, we started an after-school game club thanks to donations from teachers, staff, and parents. We are looking to add more activities for the kids to choose from, especially more of the "old fashioned" games many of the kids have never played like Yahtzee and Scrabble. For our special needs students, games like Phase 10 and Sudoku offer them a way to challenge their minds without the pressure and strengthens their math and language skills.
Many of our students don't have a safe place to go home to at night.
After school activities are ways to keep them engaged and in a safe environment for them to not only learn but to have some fun as well. It's been amazing to see things like our students asking questions and begging to learn new games. I can't wait for them to learn these activities and use the ink for our classroom printer to print out their friendly competition charts and extra puzzles and brain teasers.
