Help me give my students a hands-on, digital arts-based, and gamified American Government class!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach in a low income, inner city school where students come from many different situations and home lives. These children rely on education as the main way out of their current home situation and violent and drug ridden communities. My school serves students who came from poverty and financially unstable classrooms, prior to the pandemic. Now students are facing more economic hardship and families do not have available funding for school supplies and class lists.
I want to ensure that my students are coming back to in-person learning without having to worry about having the proper supplies so they can focus solely on learning!
Being able to provide kleenex, pencils, hand sanitizer, headphones, pens, and other basic classroom necessities without having to ask families who are already financially struggling would be so beneficial to the students and their learning experience.
CHS for Digital Arts is a CMSD Public high school that brings rigorous, college preparatory curriculum to students through project based and art inspired learning! All of my students take film, digital arts, video game design and illustration courses, in addition to their core classes! With that being said, I want to be able to bridge the gap between digital arts and American Government!
Having an iPad Pro and a PlayStation Console will allow me to gamify and my government class and incorporate graphic art into my curriculum!
We do four separate projects with different themes throughout the year and this year, during our Friday advisory, we are focusing on combining core class material with the digital arts to engage and prepare our student for careers in the digital arts during their post-secondary education and training. Our projects are themed around Mars, the Survivor game show, Post-Secondary Success and visualizing the Multiverse!
Our students are one-to-one with Mac laptops and teachers are provided with one while working there, however the teacher ones are limited when it comes to digital arts.
Having an iPad Pro will allow me to digitally draw, create, visualize and expand upon our current curriculum. It will also allow me to easily collaborate and share with students as they are also using Mac products. In addition, the iPad Pro provides access to many of the same programs the students use like GarageBand, iMovie, etc. A PlayStation will allow my students to use school-appropriate games to explore themes that are seen in their projects each quarter! There are Mars games, Survivor game and many more that will align directly with our overarching theme each quarter! It also will allow us to analyze films, stream content and excite the students when it comes to learning!
