I have an amazing group of students who overall just LOVE to learn! My goal this year is to keep that passion going. I am at a title 1 school that takes in students from a homeless shelter located in the downtown area of our city.
I concentrate on teaching about social justice issues and it has created a passion in my students for helping others.
I truly feel that they take the important concepts and ideas I teach them, absorb them and will become some of the leaders of our future.
My Project
This past year I did a mini genre wheel challenge with my students. My goal of the project was to get students engaged and interested in different types of books. Many parents were concerned their student would only read one type of book over and over again.
All good teachers reflect, I want to bring the project back but I want to make it more engaging by gamifying it and make it easier for students to find new texts to read in my own classroom library.
I have a huge classroom library but it is very disorganized. These genre stickers will be used to label all the books in my classroom library and they are the same ones used in my school library.
I am coordinating with the school librarian to plan out the gamified genre challenge this summer. It will be connected with library time, reading at home and my reading block. The stickers will also be used to create badges that students earn in a gamified genre wheel that lasts all year.
