Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic and hands-on kindergartners who like to experience their learning firsthand. This year we are focusing on STEAM activities including coding, gardening, robots and much more.
The students at my school all qualify for free breakfast and lunch, meaning that the food they get at school could be their only food that day.
Many of our students do not have the benefit of attending paid after school programs; therefore, classroom activities are that much more important for them.
My Project
I believe that learning should be a fun and desirable activity for all students. They should be excited by the prospect of learning and leave them hungry for more. Gamification is a technique I learned about in graduate school that involves making learning a game. Not only is this more fun for students, it keeps their brains constantly stimulated while they are playing like they are used to, due to computers and tablets.
These interactive and colorful reading games will also help me run small targeted centers in order to directly reach out to more students.
It is difficult to work with the entire class at the same time as many students are at different places in their learning. These games, puzzles and dice can help me target their specific area of need, as well as lead to their independent use of the games. This leaves time for me to pull out small groups of students for direct targeted instruction.
