My students need games that will help them practice reading sight words. Letter beads and laces will allow them to string and spell familiar words. The Popcorn and Fishing games will have them begging for more!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I believe that making learning fun is what gets kids hooked on school from the get go. Every day I try to get my kindergarten students to "play" and simultaneously learn. When my lessons are strategically designed as games, everyone wants to participate and everyone is working hard and having fun!
My school is an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse city school in an older neighborhood.
The students that will benefit from this project are 5 and 6 year olds, for most of whom, this is their first experience with learning in a formal setting. They are so excited to learn about reading, writing, and math! When I can use that budding excitement and create learning momentum with it, perfect environment for successful foundational skills to be mastered is created!
My Project
The very nature of a young child's learning must be in play. They learn more during games and natural exploration than they do from route activities or direct instruction. Young children need tactile objects to touch and explore in order to solidify new learning!
With these games and materials my students will be able to "play" and learn not only the required 50 sight words for kindergartners but 50 of the ones required for first graders as well!
Students will use these materials independently and with partners to practice writing and reading sight words, having fun and becoming better readers the same time! Children will use the scrabble tiles and letter beads to practice creating sight words. They will test their speed at sight word recognition during the fishing and popcorn games. They will create art projects with the foam letters, and sort sight words with the breakfast game and with the mailboxes. They will be able to use the magnetic letters I already have the in the classroom and build sight words on their own magnetic boards (they will LOVE this)!
