My Students

Due to the nature of this pandemic, students have fallen behind grade level. In order to help my students learn (and catch up to grade level) I need to include strategies that personalize student's individual needs. Working on engaging student's families, taking advantage of before and after school activities, and fast finisher activities are some ways I want to engage and keep students' interest. Providing highly entertaining and engaging board games will improve reading comprehension and promote cross curricular learning (such as history, geography and probabilities).

We are a Title I school but children come to us from all socio-economic parts of our area.

We are a public charter school with an open lottery and anyone is welcome to apply. Because of the nature of our population some of my students have a lot of support while others have almost none. A number of my students are still trying to figure to how to work with others in a positive meaningful way.

My Project

Due to the Covid pandemic I'm often left with a third of my class at home sick. At times we have even had to have our entire class use remote classroom learning strategies. Due to the nature of this pandemic, we've gotten behind in our language arts abilities.

I wish to start a game library to be used by my 5th grade students.

The games I wish to provide will promote reading comprehension, communication, and help with social studies and science literacy. I will use this library for a board game club, a take home option (check out) and activities to tie into various literacy lessons during the school day.

Board games have come a long way since the days of Monopoly and Candyland. Games now use strategies that are deeply engaging. Before starting a game a student needs to read and understand the instructions and then explain them to other students. This promotes a deeper understanding and comprehension and helps build communications skills. Some games require students to work together to win the game instead of competing against each other (helping to build cooperation skills). Other games require students to understand probabilities in order to make a good choice to complete their objective. The current generation of games requires real world literacy and communication skills. These are the things I will teach the students using the board game library
