This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school, which means they are below the socioeconomic level of other schools in the district. This means they probably have not been exposed to a rich educational experience outside of school. My students' reading levels are typically one to two grades behind peers at other schools. Students have below grade math skills due to weak foundations in computation that are causing problems with their problem solving abilities. Students excel in the arts and athletics but struggle academically.
My goals are to encourage students in all of their talents and abilities, to encourage students to uplift each other in their academic pursuits, to teach them and raise awareness to making them feel a part of the group and not on the outside of it.
My Project
Students will have access to high quality hands on practice for multiplication, division, and fractions. All skills will be covered but those are the ones kids have the most trouble learning. I want kids to know that math is fun and that there are patterns to math that will help them in understanding how to find their answers. The games will spark conversations about answers and ways each student approached the problems. My plan is to help students build their number sense skills so they have options and avenues when it comes to solving problems.
