My rural school is full of a diverse student population. Our students are full of joy and can't wait to learn every day. They get so excited by new experiences and exciting adventures. They love researching topics and playing games to enrich their learning. Every day I am inspired by their enthusiasm. In my classroom we work to collaborate every chance that we get. It is amazing how much students can teach each other and learn together if they are given the chance.
The school is very small, but it is full of a wonderful students that are excited to learn every single day.
We live on the coast, so we are able to really enrich our students learning about marine life. We are so incredibly fortunate in that aspect. On the other hand, we do not have a lot of access to technology and materials due to our lack of funding. We do our best to give our students the 21st century education that they deserve.
My Project
The big buzz in education is engagement and small groups. As we are transitioning in my district, I've realized that students need to be able play during the day. 5th graders are still kids, even though they would like to argue against this. They crave play and interaction with their peers. So, as their teacher/coach in the learning process, why fight it? I am choosing to embrace this style of learning. My classroom should rarely be quiet!
It has already been a success integrating play in the classroom during mathematics, and I am ecstatic to do so in Language Arts next!
It is harder in the upper elementary grades to find and implement these hands on learning opportunities for English Language Arts. All types of learner benefit from interacting with the materials. With cases for our classroom iPads and targeted learning games, our ELA time will be transformed into a blissful exploration of different types of texts, writing and grammar. During play students are able to not only learn the standards, but also how to interact with each other appropriately. The double sided white board and the "hear myself phones" will give students a way to play with words and books in a unique and independent way. Activities like the "Can Do" games give student confidence and the ability to use academic language while interacting with their peers. This is especially beneficial for students who are struggling with print and English Language Learners. These materials that you are giving my students access to are going to take away the groans and moans from grammar and writing. Thank you, in advance, for your support!
