Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a first grade teacher in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York. I have taught here for three years. I have found that when I meet a new class each school year the majority of the children are not reading. As I have learned through my graduate school studies, children who are not read to by adults at home have little grasp of the sounds of the English language to prepare them for school. This slows their reading development and affects all subject areas throughout their education. I am planning lessons that will build an awareness of sounds to help students learn how to read. In the upcoming school year, I plan to use nursery rhymes in the reading program to build the children's awareness of sounds in words. These nursery rhyme activities will be accompanied with group and individual games for the children, to reinforce these skills. Many word-based games will be utilized in this unit of study to help the children develop skills necessary to learn how to read.
