Games That Give for Military Kids

Help me give my students tangible, engaging activities to utilize when they visit the counseling center so they can de-escalate, practice impulse control, and build positive relationships with classmates and staff.

My Project

Our students live within the largest military housing community in San Diego. Coming from military bases at home and abroad, they face unique challenges in that often one or both parents are deployed. It is said military children are like dandelions - they bloom anywhere the winds carry them. They are hardy and upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the military, planted swiftly and surely.

Military children have learned from an early age that home is where their hearts are, that a good friend can be found in every corner of the world, and that education doesn’t only come from school.

To be so resilient and adaptable, our students need resources to support their emotional health. They not only depend on the services provided by counselors but the actual counseling center itself, as it represents a piece of home, welcoming them in and providing a steady sense of comfort when so much else is unknown. The games provided in the counseling center will help students de-escalate their heightened emotions when taking a break, will support them in their continued practice of impulse control and social skills, and foster opportunities for relationships to be built between students and staff.
