Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are young children, ages 8-10 years old, with intellectual disabilities attending a special day program in a general education elementary school located in a high poverty community. Resources are limited, and specialized equipment and materials are expensive.
We need high-interest materials to help these students engage in learning how to share and take turns, as well as reinforcing functional living skills.
Learning new skills is especially difficult for children who have a short attention span and lack internal motivation to persevere. My students need multiple opportunities to learn and practice basic skills every day.
My Project
My students need hands-on materials to help them learn basic reading skills such as decoding CVC words, blends and digraphs. These games will help reinforce skills they are learning.
Daily practice and learning using a multi-modal approach helps my students with intellectual disabilities learn basic academic skills such as learning how to read.
Games make learning much more engaging and gives kinesthetic learners opportunities to use hands-on materials.
Students will work towards meeting learning goals while working on social skills such as turn-taking and sharing. Games are an excellent opportunity for my students to work on many different functional life skills.
