Help me give my students math centers. Versa tiles and math games will give us an engaging way to practice addition and subtraction and give us hands on experience without using technology.
My students are from a small rural community. We have four towns that feed into our district. Our school is made up of Kindergarten through 3rd grade. We have 5 sections of each. My students are a very eager to learn and love having the opportunity to explore new things.
The students in my classroom are very active and inquisitive.
The love to learn new things, build things, and make SLIME. They surprise me everyday with the new things they say and do. I am honored to be able to spend time with these students everyday and watch them learn and grow.
My Project
We will use these materials during Math workshop. After I teach a mini-lesson on a math topic, my class will work at different centers while I pull small groups to work more closely on specific math topics. Some students might review a recently learned topic with a partner using the "VersaTiles." Other students might work together playing one of the math board games to practice addition and subtraction skills: "I Sea 10, Connect 4, Number Sequence, etc." The "lamination sheets" will help me keep my created games and resources fresh and usable throughout the year. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the concepts through these games but also through use of modeling. I can use the "rekenreks" and "cuisenaire rods" to model number sense concepts. These manipulatives are meant for the board so all my students can easily see the concepts being demonstrated.
All of these skills are needed in the real world and will help them to grow in their understanding of the real world connection of math and life!
I don't want my students to be sitting at their seats doing worksheets but instead engaging in centers with their peers. This is very important to me because my students need a hands-on experience. We learn by communicating, touching, and doing the skill taught! You can help keep my classroom fun and active!
