This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the high school librarian of an urban 9-12 secondary school in California. Some of my academic and psycho-social objectives are to bolster my students' literacy scores on standardized tests (currently 71% have not demonstrated mastery on the Reading portion of our state's yearly assessment), help them express themselves with greater language fluency, and provide them with opportunities to develop their interpersonal social skills. About 15% of our population are second language learners and/or students receiving special education services---students in these two programs often struggle with their oral expression and/or abilities to interact in healthy, productive ways.

My Project

Our students are struggling with verbal fluency because they are either learning English or are intellectually disabled/autistic. They also tend to feel rather excluded from the mainstream activity.

We hope to address these academic and interpersonal issues by designing a conversation program.

Every other week, ESL and Special Education students will get together with English Only peers to play language board games such as Monopoly, Scattegories, Clue, and Taboo.

Through this spirited, motivational, and low stress environment, students will gain greater comfort expressing themselves verbally and interacting with peers. And the English Only peers learn about empathy, leadership, and tolerance.
