This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students that I serve are: dreamers, artists, gamers, authors, and scientists. As transition students, they love to be engaged by hands-on learning activities that connect to their everyday lives. Students that are in my classes need specially designed instruction to meet their educational and personal goals with emphasis on generalizing skills around the school community and the community that they live in. Creativity is a vital component of success in my classroom and that means looking for inspiration all around our community.
My Project
Game play can involve many hidden rules that people disabilities may struggle with. As a teacher of Functional Communication, it is important to use creative ways to teach and model: team work, turn taking, and problem solving.
These board games (Escape Room in a Box, Giant Tumbling Towers, UNO) would support my students learning in the area of communication with peers.
Students often face many struggles on a given day within the learning environment. These struggles can hinder the learning process. By using game play, students can be supported in their growth in a fun and low stakes environment.
As the teacher, I often find it is an incredible learning experience as it will often present a surprise for peers to learn someone is an expert in a certain game.
