Mrs. Street from Detroit MI is requesting educational kits & games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need interactive tools to support their literary, communication, fine motor, gross motor and problem-solving skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come to school everyday ready to share their experiences, desires, hopes and dreams with me. Their imaginations and desires for their life inspires everyone privileged enough to hear. All of my students reside on the North East side of a large city, in an area decimated by factory closures and still recovering from the 1967 riots. Vacant lots, boarded up buildings and tall grass surround our school neighborhood but this blight and image of urban despair does not stop my student from dreaming of the brightness of possibilities their future holds. My students are preparing to be our future leaders and need our help to get them the necessary tools of success.
The materials that I am asking to be funded include a variety of textured and magnetized building blocks to assist with communication, fine motor, gross motor and problem solving skill development. Literary board games including Scrabble Jr., Life Jr., Monopoly Jr. and Apples to Apples Jr., all of which teach basic literary, communication and turn-taking social skills development. I am seeking a variety of social skills games that teach understanding emotions, handing frustration, expressing wants and needs and building positive friendships with peers. I am also seeking games that increase short and long term memory development. Many of my students have impairments in their long and short term memory and through repetitive practice, sorting and dramatic play these skills are improved.
My students range from age 5-14 and have a variety of different needs and therefore the use of dramatic play and interactive educational games is a way to meet the individual needs of my diverse learners.
A typical day in my resource room involves me working with 4-6 groups of 3-6 students to work on their individual needs which include increasing: memory skills, fine motor, gross motor, basic literacy skills, basic mathematics skills, building positive peer relationships, and effective communication. All of these skills can be improved through the direct teacher-led and directed use of educational and interactive games. These games will be used daily for years to come to help all of my diverse learners gather the skills needed for school success.
