Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is a vibrant group of second graders, ages seven and eight, at a Title I school in East Palo Alto, CA. They are smart, talented, and excited to learn! We consider ourselves a school family and support each other every day to work hard, reach our goals, and learn from our mistakes. My goal is to provide my students with resources and materials that will spark their creativity and create a passion for learning.
My students live less than ten minutes away from some of the largest tech companies in the world and an Ivy League school; yet the high school graduation rate for their zip code is 50%.
I want to set my students up on a pathway to success and college for certain! I am committed to providing them with an equitable quality of education compared to that of what students receive in neighboring affluent school districts.
My Project
I am asking for board games for my students to play in class, to practice using the skills they learn in our Social Emotional Learning curriculum. By playing games with classmates students will be able to work together to solve problems, and work on their speaking and listening skills.
My students are mostly English language learners, having an opportunity to practice language skills in an authentic way will help them with their language development.
Not only will they be using and learning new vocabulary, but they will learn about turn taking, winning and loosing, and playing fair. By playing games, students will be able to practice these skills in a way that comes naturally to them, through play!
