Students today are nothing like the students of yesteryear. Instead, constantly surrounded by computers, cell phones, TV's, iPads, and many other gadgets designed to make life simpler, they live in a high pace, technology based world overflowing with resources and opportunities. However, coming from a small community, many of my students do not have opportunities to experience new technology, opportunities, or resources outside of the classroom and are struggling to keep up.
The 26 4th and 5th grade students in my classroom are loving, active, energetic, and nothing short of amazing!
Being in a split level class can be challenging at times, but they meet every single day with enthusiasm and excitement, ready to learn! We are a very small Title I (100% free lunch qualified) school of only 215 K-5th grade students, nestled in a small, rural, often forgotten about, portion of the county. We may be small, but we are mighty, as what we lack in size, we make up for in heart! We support, love, and encourage one another because in the classroom, and the entire school as a whole, we are a family.
Sometimes, adding something as simples as games into the classroom equation ramps up student learning even more, as it allows students to practice and review concepts, work together, have fun in a way that doesn't seem like "learning", while also letting them teach one another. This not only reinforces learning, but also adds in additional skills such as team work, cooperation, empathy, the list goes on and on! These quick games are perfect for handling Science and Social Studies content, which can be overwhelming for 4th and 5th graders, simply due to the sheer volume of new content they are subjected to in these grade levels.
By donating to our project, you will not only increase student achievement and content retention, but you will also allow my students to have a little fun while reviewing, which can often be a monotonous and boring, yet necessary task!
Students will be able to consistently spiral review content throughout the year, while also fousing on specific content as a way for test preparation. In addition, students on the Academic Team will also benefit from these resources, as these games will also help them in learning and retaining new content, in a more engaging manner, to prepare for District and Regional competition!
